Why Not Go to the Automated Car Wash?
Automated car washes are cheaper and can work in a pinch, but shouldn't be relied on as the only way to maintain your car's exterior for a couple reasons:
1. They Damage Paint
Any wash using brushes on your car will scratch the paint slowly with each use. The bristles are contaminated with dirt from all the previous cars, rubbing those particles over your paint. This is what causes "swirl marks" that dull the finish of your paint over time. Gentle hand washing prevents the majority of these scratches.
2. They Can't Clean Everything
Automated car washes usually can't remove things like algae, bugs, tar, sap, and brake dust that has become stuck on the wheels. They also don't clean as well within the wheel wells. Over time, your car will begin to look not so clean if the automated wash is the only way you are cleaning your car, and will require a detailed hand wash to bring it back to a better, cleaner condition.
